Since the first publication of Anne of Green Gables in 1908, generations of children have laughed and cried -- but mostly laughed -- along with its spirited heroine. Precocious, talkative Anne comes from an orphanage to live on the farm of the Cuthberts, an elderly brother and sister on Canada's Prince Edward Island. The lively 11-year-old turns the Cuthberts' tranquil world on its ear with her fanciful chatter and innocent mischief, but her goodwill, intelligence, and joie de vivre ultimately endear her to her guardians as well as her friends and neighbors.
