In 1959, Homer "Sonny" Hickam and his Rocket Boy friends are seniors in high school, immersed in the pleasures and pains of the town they grew up in--Coalwood, West Virginia. When it comes time for the Coalwood Christmas Pageant, the tensions in the town threaten to explode, and Sonny has to take some important steps toward growing up.
